Lucky Drunken Mint

Last night I finally got to see Jimmy Eat World live in concert.  After all these years of being a fan of them, and constantly missing out on their shows, I finally made one.  First off I will always be grateful to neverbesocial for introducing me to Jimmy Eat World back in those halcyon Phoenix days.  (Actually I have to thank him for introducing me to quite a few of my favorite bands.  He has been a sort of musical Gandalf guiding me through the perilous path of new music.  Although I still can’t stand Mates of State or Portugal the Man, but hey whatever I can’t be expected to like everything he does.)  Anyways I got to the show earlier than I did for The Black Keys a few weeks ago, but despite that, there was still a huge line–over a block long–by the time I got there.  The people at Terminal 5, however, kept the line moving quickly and I was able to get inside before I froze completely to death.

Once inside I went back up to my spot on the third floor railing, grabbed an empanada, a couple beers, and got ready for the show.  I can’t tell you how excited I was for this show.  I have been looking forward to seeing JEW for a long time now and the fact that my first concert was going to be the Clarity tour only added to my exhilaration–as Clarity is one of my all-time favorite albums.  So I suffered through the opening act–they actually were not that bad, but I just didn’t feel like waiting any longer to see JEW.  A little bit after 9:00 JEW came out to the rousing cheers of the crowd and commenced to playing Clarity in it’s entirety–including Goodbye Sky Harbor.  It was a fantastic show and they sounded great, and considering this was their first show on the tour, I expect that as the tour rolls on they will tighten up their sound even more.  After they finished playing Clarity they left so they could take part in the obligatory encore–bands really need to stop doing that as it’s pretty contrived–and then they came back out and played some of their b-sides and then finished off the show with Work, Pain, The Middle, and Sweetness.  The crowd went absolutely ape-shit for Sweetness and it really is the best song to finish the show to as everyone left completely pumped after that song.  Well there is not really much more for me to say that the pics and videos can’t say on their own.  So enjoy the pics and videos.  (By the way Jimmy Eat World if you all are upset about me posting these pics and videos online just twitter me to take it down.  No need to release the hounds.)

Unfortunately my camera died right as they were segueing from The Middle to Sweetness which is why it cuts off so abruptly.  If only I hadn’t been lazy earlier in the day and charged my camera.  Oh well.

Update 7:15

fantastic work Dan! I can’t wait to see’em in Tempe. You should consider a career with Rolling Stone.

@liskid – Hah yeh right except for the fact that I struggle holding the camera straight because I am always drinking/drunk.

  • Jimmy Eat World played Terminal 5 2/23/09 (Review/Setlist/Videos) | The Audio Perv Says:

[...] Jimmy Eat World’s celebrating the 10th anniversary for their album “Clarity” by performing it in full at ten shows. This is a one-time only occasion and last night was the first show of the mini tour. At a sold out Terminal 5 in NY, the band played all of “Clarity” as well as a few oldies and singles. Check out the setlist below thanks to the board from JimmyEatWorld.com (it might not be order, don’t flip!) There are nine shows left so go see them! (Dates are below the setlist) For more pics and a solid review, go here. [...]

I have seen JEW 4 times and once at Balcony Lights which used to be the right next to the 7 11 at Maryland Parkway right down from your and Gabes house. There was 30 people and my friend Jordan begged me to go because I had a car. And I thank him yearly because it is still one of my favorite shows I have ever been to and introduced me to this amazing band. I am so jealous you went to the show but grateful for the great footage. Thank you Dan!! They are an amazing band and I am happy for all their success.

    • Perpetual Memory Loss Says:

@Magness – You’re lucky you’ve seen them 4 times and once at a seriously small venue like Balcony Lights. They totally deserve all the success they have, which is why I buy their records and don’t download them, and why I bought one of their t-shirts last night.

You should write for rolling stone

  • Bob Says:

Did they give you crap for having a camera? I am going to Boston on Thursday, I want to get video.

    • Perpetual Memory Loss Says:

@Bob – I don’t know how it’s going to be in Boston, but at Terminal 5 no one said anything. Pretty much everyone had cameras or cell phone and was taking pics and videos and no one said anything. Good luck with it though, and let me know if you get any video because I’d like to see it.

  • liskid Says:

@magness You mean Benway Records ;)

  • Amanda Says:

There you’ve gone and done it Dan, I have to go listen to the album! LUCKY!!! Sounds like a great concert! You got some good pictures too!

  • Magness Says:

@lidskid- you might be right because I did not want to go when I went back then but I know it then became Balcony Lights. I was just lucky but I did see a couple bad performances at that place as well. JEW was the only gem.

  • liskid Says:

@magness Blink 182 played at Benways once too, $5 show. I saw a ton of good music after it was Benways, when it became The Sound Barrier, and then it became Balcony Lights. However, I saw a ton of crap too- rather avoided it and went to Wendy’s till headliners came on, which is now a Starbucks. It’s been a downward slope for the UNLV area.

  • neverbesocial Says:

@liskid – Benway Bop’s hosted a ton of great show’s. Blink played way back when, were you even old enough to go to shows back then? Har har har :)

I can’t wait to see them too. It’s going to be an awesome show in Chi-town. I’ve seen these guys quite a few times and even took my nephew when he was 4 years old cause he sang Clarity all the time, hahaha.

  • fabes Says:

yeah that area is not as cool as it once was!

  • Magness Says:

@liskid-The Sound Barrier that is the name. Thank you it was killing me. It is sad because everything is closing down on Maryland.

  • liskid Says:

@allmylvhomies There’s a starbucks on campus, where wendy’s was, and next to einstein bagels. That’s THHREE in between flamingo and trop. I am sure there is one in the albertson’s parking lot strip mall lot on flam and maryland too. iegads. Big Bs was awesome too, but that’s gone.

  • fabes Says:

the only good spots are the pit and the crown and i guess the frog

  • Perpetual Memory Loss Says:

@liskid – Oh man I totally forgot about that Starbucks. Yekk what’s this world coming to when there’s three Starbucks that close together.

@fabes I guess except the frog is overpriced and usually full of lamesters, the crown is a sausage party, and the pit is a health hazard haha.

  • fabes Says:

yeah the frog is full of lamesters!i go to the crown for beer and fish and chips… haha the pit is the best man
